FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Boy She Kept starts with the arrest of the author for marijuana possession. His solitary confinement, and then being shipped to St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, will constitute probably the first 3 of 12 chapters of this book about a young teen 'given away' by his parents to adults who sought to use the teen for unpaid labor and... In 2015 the author was hired for a movie production, casting him as a human trafficking slaver. This role reopened the door of his memories in response to having to act the role of a human trafficker in this movie. The director of the movie was the first person to be told by R.D. Connor, "I am a human trafficking victim." Rick had attempted to tell his father these stories in 2012, but was told not to, "That's all water under the bridge." After a couple sleepless nights, Rick put these memories to rest until being cast in the human trafficking movie. Rick started talking about his teen experiences with some friends and realized that these memories were not completely dealt with and were affecting him in ways he didn't realize. So he started calling some human trafficking organizations to find out more about any resources or connections they could provide help in resolving his memories and transforming them into a book. Of the dozen human trafficking organizations contacted by the author, none of them actually helped male human trafficking victims at all. They only help female human trafficking victims and often when prostitution is involved. With the help of a Marriage & Family Therapist provided by the Journey Out organization, the author has been able to accept and be comfortable with most of the memories he dealt with during several months of counseling at the Journey Out center. During these weekly sessions Rick learned to view his memories from a neutral perspective and maintain his dignity and pride. The therapist encouraged Rick to write this book and added, "It may help many other teen boys." The author has pledged that after reaching the crowdfunding goal of $3,000 to write a rough draft of this book, that 10% of the donations received from the crowdfunding received thereafter will be given to the Journey Out organization in appreciation for their help and support of the author. # # # The author, R.D. Connor, arrived in St. John's, Newfoundland in June 1970 from San Diego, California. The author left Newfoundland in May 1972, hitchhiking across Canada to Vancouver Island, then down the Pacific coast to San Diego. During the two years in Newfoundland, Rick became a songwriter and has continued to write at least a dozen songs per year since then. His songs have appeared on albums, in movie soundtracks, and have been performed by the author in various rock bands including, The Rich, American Zen, and Kung Fu Cowboy & Zombie Three. |
